Collaboration is essential to any company that wants to enhance its technology. If the IT team doesn't understand the business priorities, and the business team doesn't understand the nature of the company's IT systems, there can be no progress and no plan. Those companies will become laggards while companies where the IT and business teams can "play nice together" will forge ahead.

Lauren: In a BPI study earlier this summer, business executives said their competitors were ALREADY seeing their competitors surpass them. 45% said customers who'd adopted these new technologies were offering more choice, convenience and accessibility. And 34 percent said competitors were improving their margins with the help of cloud-enabled IT. Here's the impact on the top line: 25% said competitors were "taking revenue and market share." The laggards in technology can dawdle no longer. It's time to get in the game if they expect to win it.

Great comments up to now, but I can see both IT and Business Leaders throwing their hands into the air and saying that however much they tried, they just do not seem to speak the same language.
We have done quite extensive research on this over the past 5 years in smaller and medium-sized businesses and seen this phenomenon play out time and again. Your recent research reports also show the same on the enterprise front.
We need to do for IT, what finance did in the past 20-30 years: Emerge from Bean counters in the corner to essential business partners. Every Executive these days can read financial reports and can hold their own with jargon like "depreciation", "EBITDA" and others. In IT this is no given and one of your report states that 93% of executives see the increasing necessity and value of technology and 85% try to understand. But the main word here is "try". Only 16% of frontline IT staff say their business has a comprehensive plan.
So yes, we do need to start to talk, but I would like to postulate that we also need to start to agree on a language that we both understand.
